Since January 2026, the civic exam is mandatory for anyone applying for a residence permit in France — whether it's the Multi-Year Residence Contract (CSP) or the Resident Card (CR).
It assesses your knowledge of the values of the Republic, French institutions, and the rights and duties of citizens.
Since 2026, the TCF IRN French test is required alongside the civic exam for most procedures: CSP (A2), resident card (B1) and naturalization (B2).
Three tests: reading, listening, speaking. Practice with authentic audio and timed mock exams.
Discover TCF IRN →1,000+ for the civic exam, 660 for the TCF IRN, over 1,600 questions in total. Detailed corrections and explanations for every answer.

Since 1 January 2026 (Law no. 2024-42 of 26 January 2024 and Decree no. 2025-648 of 15 July 2025), two exams are required for most applicants for a multi-year residence permit, a resident card or French naturalisation: the civic exam (a new exam organised by OFII) and a French-level certification (TCF IRN or equivalent: TEF IRN, DELF/DALF, DCL FP). Required levels have been raised: A2 for the multi-year residence permit (new), B1 for the resident card, B2 for naturalisation.
A2 for the multi-year residence permit (CSP), B1 for the resident card (10 years), B2 for French naturalisation. The TCF IRN now assesses up to B2 and the certificate is valid for 2 years.
There is no required order. In practice, start with the one that needs more preparation for you: if your French is solid but you know little about French institutions, take the civic exam first; if the opposite, the TCF IRN first. Our complete pack lets you prepare both in parallel.
The multi-year residence permit (CSP) is generally issued for 2 to 4 years depending on the basis: typically 2 years for «private and family life» or «employee», up to 4 years for «passport talent». The resident card (CR) is valid for 10 years and is generally accessible after 5 years of regular residence (3 years for spouses of French nationals, with exceptions for refugees and other situations). Naturalisation generally requires 5 years of residence in France (2 years after a French degree at bachelor+2 level, or 4 years for spouses married for at least 4 years). Each process requires a different certified French level (A2, B1 or B2).
Yes. The civic content is based on the Livret du citoyen published by the Ministry of the Interior and the OFII reference framework. The TCF IRN content follows the France Éducation International (FEI) programme for the 3 levels (A2, B1, B2) and the 3 papers (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, oral expression).
Yes. It integrates the changes introduced by Law no. 2024-42 of 26 January 2024 and Decree no. 2025-648 of 15 July 2025, in force since 1 January 2026: new required French levels, mandatory civic exam, new TCF IRN framework assessed up to B2.
It depends heavily on your starting level. For the civic exam, most candidates feel ready after 2 to 3 weeks of regular practice. For the TCF IRN, starting from a level close to the target: count about 4 to 6 weeks to reach A2 (CSP), 6 to 10 weeks for B1 (resident card), 8 to 12 weeks for B2 (naturalisation). Allow more time if your starting level is further away. Our progress tracking gives you a live estimate.
The civic exam is taken at an OFII-approved centre: Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie (CCI) for the CSP and resident card pathways, France Éducation International (FEI) for naturalisation. The TCF IRN is taken at a France Éducation International approved centre. Registration, dates and conduct are managed by these organisations. Our role is preparation only.
