Impots
Taxes (impots) are mandatory contributions paid by citizens and businesses to fund public services and the functioning of the State. Paying taxes is a civic duty enshrined in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 (Article 13). The main taxes in France are income tax (progressive, calculated based on household income), VAT (value-added tax, included in the price of goods and services), and local taxes (property tax). Tax revenue finances education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, and national solidarity.
Example
Every year, French taxpayers declare their income online at impots.gouv.fr so that their income tax can be calculated and collected.
