Laicite

Laicite (secularism) is the principle of separation of Churches and State, enshrined in Article 1 of the French Constitution. It guarantees freedom of conscience and the free exercise of religion, while imposing religious neutrality on public service agents. The 1905 law constitutes its legal foundation. Since the law of March 15, 2004, the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols has been prohibited in public primary and secondary schools. Laicite is not opposed to religion: it ensures that the State neither favors nor hinders any belief.
Example

A town hall employee cannot wear visible religious symbols while performing their duties, because they represent the State, which is neutral toward all religions.
