Nationalite francaise

French nationality is the legal bond that connects a person to France and confers the status of French citizen. It can be acquired in several ways: by birth on French territory (jus soli/right of the soil), by descent from a French parent (jus sanguinis/right of blood), by marriage to a French spouse (after four years of marriage and under certain conditions), or by naturalization. French nationality confers rights (voting, consular protection, access to public employment) but also obligations (respect for the law, payment of taxes, national defense).
Example

A child born in France to foreign parents can automatically obtain French nationality at age 18, provided they have resided in France for at least five years since the age of 11.
